Not directly a Reform matter, but we are advertising a free opportunity to learn about how Bahrain is countering extremism. The Constitution of Bahrain states that Islam is the official religion and that Shari’a (Islamic law) is a principal source for legislation and therefore this may be a very interesting alternative, or perhaps complementary, view from here in the West.
The George Washington University’s Program on Extremism (PoE) has been involved in research and discussions related to countering terrorism, including collaborations with Bahrain. The PoE has co-hosted events and presented research on the Global Coalition against Daesh (known here as ISIS), including a panel discussion on the Coalition’s counterterrorism efforts, with a speaker from the Embassy of Bahrain. Additionally, Bahrain has been a focus of research within the broader context of countering violent extremism and terrorism.

The Program on Extremism at The George Washington University is pleased to host Her Excellency Alanood Ebrahim Al Khalifa, First Secretary at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the United Kingdom, for a discussion on Bahrain’s perspective on countering radicalism and extremism in the Middle East. Moderated by Senior Research Fellow Omar Mohammed, this conversation will examine Bahrain’s efforts to combat extremism, from counterterrorism policies to initiatives focused on preventing radicalization through education, media, and community engagement. The discussion will also explore Bahrain’s role in regional security cooperation, its partnerships in counterterrorism efforts, and the Kingdom’s broader commitment to promoting tolerance and coexistence through interfaith dialogue and social resilience. This event provides a unique opportunity to hear firsthand how Bahrain navigates the challenges of extremism and contributes to regional stability.
Founded in 2015, the Program on Extremism at George Washington University has quickly become a leading research center on all forms of extremism. The Program spearheads innovative and thoughtful academic inquiry, producing empirical work and developing pragmatic policy solutions that resonate with policymakers, civic leaders, and the general public. Its partnerships with some of the world’s most prominent universities, think tanks, media outlets and governmental agencies are a testament of the Program’s research quality, independence and innovative approach.
